Ben Okri is often described as magical realism although.

Irritating it certainly is and having read 'Astonishing the Gods' I don't think I will read Okri again.

I prefer thought provoking novels to have some clearly identifiable landmarks which through extrapolation of personal experience, I can make sense of.

Having said this, the man won a Booker and there is a clear market for this ethereal work.

And perhaps credit should go to someone who has tried to do something different which one could not have foreseen would sell.

If the tradition of African and African-American literature is often in the 'spiritual' mould, then perhaps Okri has just embellished a form which has been around sinse the days of Anansi.
