Artilce: Three continents, three different stories of child birth

Somehow it kind of seems appropriate to start this blog with a link to a series of articles on childbirth. The series describes three birthing experiences (in Sierra Leone. UK and USA).

Who are all the little bald guys ? How did they get the chicks?

The precise objective of this article is unclear.

Sierra leone is a country which has gone through dramatic transformation from one of Africa's jewels (the exchange rate of approx four Leones to a pound sterling in the 70's bears testimony).

I'm uncomfortable with the visuals used to illustrate the experiences of the mothers but yes funding of a health service in Africa remains precarious.

Channel 4 in the UK showed a programme called Undercover Mother in July which does suggest that proactivity as an NHS patient is hugely important when using the maternity services as midwives are so short on the ground. http://www.channel4.com/news/dispatches/health/undercovermother

Don't know much about the US health system except that you probably get what your employee insurance can pay for.

So yes an interesting article recognising the battle faced the world round in giving birth. Perhaps the lesson is whether African countries should go down the US route of employee health insurance or whether they will ever be able to afford a proper NHS.
